Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.

Author Guidelines

The purpose of the Journal of Leadership, Equity, and Research is to advance the understanding of equity in K-12 and higher education systems.  The editors have an open submission policy and seek manuscripts on a wide variety of issues confronting leaders focused on equity.   We will seek to publish original work that describes quantitative or qualitative research, surveys, policy analyses, and promising practices.

Types of Submission

Feature Articles present important data-based research results of broad significance for the leadership of equitable practices.  Feature articles should be no more than 6000 words including title page, abstract, and references.

Essays/Reactions describe new developments related to equity and may address issues of relevance to the field of education in general.  These articles should not exceed 3000 words, all-inclusive.

Case Stories describe particular events related to equity practices. They could include novel approaches, description of specific cases that may be instructive to the field, or courageous attempts to improve practice.  Case Stories should not exceed 2000 words.

Book/Media Reviews should report on recent publications that are likely to be of interest to leaders in K-12 and higher education systems.  Reviews should not exceed 1500 words.

Manuscripts should follow the rules governing headings, references, and general writing style of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed., 2010).  The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font (Times New Roman preferred); one-inch margins; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
